Shroud Cay and the Mangroves

Shroud Cay turned out to be a very nice anchoring spot. We did a lot of exploring by dinghy here as well as climbing a hill with a view.

Ed said this reminded him of Mt. Vesusvius.

By dinghy we traveled about a mile or so to find a mangrove forest. Wow! Unbelievable. Mangroves were everywhere in this one area. We entered a very small shallow "creek" with Mangroves on both sides. It was just wide enough for a dinghy and barely deep enough. Not far down we had to get out of the dinghy and pull it over a small sand bar before boarding it again. As soon as we got back on I noticed a fish swim quickly away in front of us. We caught up with the fish soon enough to realize it was a small nurse shark! and to think, we were both wading in here! It didn't scare me after I realised how scared it was of us! We continued down this creek for just a little while till it got even shallower, so we turned the dinghy around and went back. This was a really cool adventure! We loved it! It felt like going down the waterway like in the movie the African Queen with Katherine Hepburn. In fact, someone told us that this part of the movie was filmed close to the area!

Along the way to the mangroves.  Very interesting coast line.

The path to the small narrow mangrove creek.

Where we got out of the dinghy to go over the sand bar.

Close up of the mangrove - this is a black mangrove.  The white mangrove does not have the aerial roots.

See the black towards the middle of the photo?  I think it was a very large spider.  I was just starting to hold onto the branch when this insect scampered quickly away.  It was very big!
